How can the same action sound different at different times-yesterday, today, or tomorrow? Imagine you play a game. Yesterday, you played. That action happened before now, so played is past tense. Today, you play. It happens now, or it is something you do regularly, so play is present tense. Tomorrow, you will play. That action will happen later, so will play is future tense. Notice the action is the same: playing a game. But the action word changes because the time changes. Yesterday points to the past, today points to the present, and tomorrow points to the future. These tense names help you tell when an action happens. Listen to the time word first. It tells you which form to choose when you talk about the same game. You can use this pattern each time. So, how can one action sound different? Tense gives us the clue: past is before, present is now, and future is later.
