Accounting is a simple system for recording and summarizing money activity—what comes in, what goes out, and what you have left. Think of it like a clear, organized money story you can check anytime. To keep it simple, most accounting ideas fit into five labels. Assets are what you own that have value, like cash, a laptop, or a car. Liabilities are what you owe, like a loan or a credit card balance. Equity is what’s left for you after subtracting what you owe from what you own. Then there’s activity over time: Revenue is money you earn or receive, and expenses are costs you pay to live or operate. By tracking these, accounting helps you see where your money is going, measure how you’re doing, and make better decisions with confidence.
