How can one slice of pizza be called a fraction? Start with one whole pizza. Share it between two people and cut it into two equal pieces. Each is one half, or 1/2: one of two equal parts. Now divide that same pizza into four equal pieces. Each is one quarter, or 1/4: one of four equal parts. A half and a quarter both describe the same whole, but they are different sizes. One half is one of two equal pieces; one quarter is one of four. The more equal pieces, the smaller each piece. Keep comparing with that same whole pizza. Here's the key: a piece is a fraction only when the whole is divided into equal parts. Unequal pieces are not fair quarters. So one slice is a quarter when it is one of four equal parts.
