Video narration
An adult suddenly collapses in front of you and gives gasping breaths. You have seconds to act, not time to search for perfect CPR. Tap their shoulders and ask loudly, "Are you okay?" Check for normal breathing quickly. Gasping, irregular breaths are not normal breathing. Don't wait for recovery. Start CPR. Call emergency services. Put the phone on speaker so the dispatcher can guide you while you keep acting, and send someone to find an AED-an automated external defibrillator. Start CPR with firm, fast compressions in the center of the chest, at 100-120 compressions per minute. Push hard enough to move the chest, and keep going. You do not need perfect technique to begin helping. Continue until emergency help arrives or the AED tells you what to do. If an adult is unresponsive and not breathing normally: call, compress, use the AED when it arrives.
