Did you play yesterday, play today, and play tomorrow? The action is playing, but listen to the verbs: yesterday, you played; today, you play; tomorrow, you will play. Same action, three points on the timeline. That is tense: the verb form that shows when an action happens. First, find the time. Before now is past: "I played yesterday." Now, or something you do regularly, is present: "I play today," or "I play after school." Later is future: "I will play tomorrow." The verb is not changing randomly. It changes because the action's time has changed. Now try this: Complete the sentence, "Riya ___ her homework yesterday." Which time fits-past, present, or future? Past. So the sentence is, "Riya finished her homework yesterday." So, was the action different? No. The action is the same; the verb changes to show when it happens: past, present, or future.
