You're beside a classmate before class, and you ask, "What are you reading?" They say, "A book." You already know this rhythm: one person asks, the other answers, and the talk belongs to both of you. Now hear that same small exchange in Sanskrit: "Kim pathasi?" "Pustakam pathami." It means, "What are you reading?" "I'm reading a book." Listen for the familiar pattern-not a speech to memorize, but a question that gets an answer. Sanskrit can be read in books and recited aloud, but here the words are doing something between two people: sharing meaning. Sanskrit isn't trapped in old texts. You can use it for a conversation now. So picture that classmate again. The next time you hear Sanskrit, remember: it can be part of a real back-and-forth, not just something you meet on a page.
