Have you heard "anafora" in Portuguese class and thought it only meant repeating words? In an ENEM essay, the same name describes two different jobs. As a figura de linguagem-a figure of speech-anafora repeats a word or phrase at the start of successive sentences: "Education transforms. Education opens paths." But anafora in coesao textual-textual cohesion-points back to information already given. "Many students face barriers to reading. This challenge needs attention." "This challenge" takes you back to those barriers; it doesn't repeat the beginning. Same name, different operation. One creates emphasis through repetition; the other connects ideas through retomada, referring back. When reading or revising your ENEM essay, ask: does it repeat at the start, or point back to something mentioned earlier? So, in your ENEM essay, can anafora mean both? Yes: one repeats at the beginning; the other returns to something already said.
