At a meal, are you eating or drinking-and which Japanese verb do you choose? The page gives you two clear choices: 食べます, tabemasu, means "eat," and 飲みます, nomimasu, means "drink." So you use 食べます with ごはん-rice or a meal-fish, meat, and egg. You use 飲みます with water and other beverages. That's the turn: eating and drinking are not one general action in Japanese. At your meal, food? 食べます-tabemasu. Drinks? 飲みます-nomimasu.
