How does an email cross the internet and appear in someone's inbox instantly? Think of sending a letter: you write a message, add an address, and hand it to the post. Email does the same with a digital address. When you press Send, your phone or computer hands the message to an outgoing mail server, a computer for email. It reads the part after the @ to identify the recipient's email service. But the email does not travel directly from your device to theirs. Mail servers pass it to the recipient's mail server, which stores it in their mailbox. As it moves, digital data can be divided into smaller pieces-not a physical letter traveling in one piece. When the recipient opens their app or webmail, it shows the stored message in the inbox. It arrives because mail servers find the destination, store the message, and deliver it to your inbox.
