Arriving in Malaysia without knowing Malay can make even a simple conversation feel stressful-you may worry about saying the wrong thing or not knowing how to respond. But you do not need to memorise a lot to begin. Three polite words can carry you through common moments. When someone helps you, say "Terima kasih." It means "Thank you." If someone helps you, those are the words to show appreciation. When you need help or want to make a polite request, say "Tolong." It means "Please," or "help me." If you make a mistake, say "Maaf." It means "Sorry." Three words, three everyday situations: receiving help, asking for help, and apologising. You can start speaking a little Malay right away without knowing everything. Keep this trio ready: "Terima kasih"-"Thank you," "Tolong"-"Please," and "Maaf"-"Sorry." That is your first step into everyday Malay.
