Is 0.8 smaller than 0.75 because 8 is smaller than 75? Think about money: dollars and cents are easy to compare because each digit has a place. Decimals work the same way. The digit after the decimal point is in the tenths place. The next is in the hundredths place. Each place names a different amount: eight tenths is not eight hundredths. The comparison flips: 0.8 becomes 0.80. A zero added to the right does not change the value; it shows the hundredths place. Now line up the decimal points and compare from left to right. If the tenths tie, compare hundredths, then the next place. So, 0.8 and 0.80 are equal, and both are greater than 0.75. In order: 0.65, 0.75, 0.8. Why is 0.8 not smaller? Because it is 0.80: eight tenths is more than seven tenths and five hundredths.
