How could ancient Egyptians keep a body from decaying thousands of years ago? Salt can help preserve food by drawing out moisture. Imagine your family grieving in ancient Egypt. Many Egyptians believed death did not end a person's journey; the body had to remain for what came after. After death, the body's processes stop, and bacteria begin breaking it down. Moisture helps decay along. Remove much of it, and decay slows. That was the practical secret-not magic. Egyptians covered the body with natron, a natural mixture of salt-like minerals that drew moisture out and dried it. But drying the outside was not the whole task. The body's inner organs also had to be handled as part of the preparation. So how did Egyptians keep a body from decaying? They covered it with natron and let it dry, slowing decay.
