The Shahada is a short statement of faith in Islam. The word “Shahada” means “testimony” or “witnessing.” It says, in Arabic: “There is no god but God, and Muhammad is the messenger of God.” The first part affirms belief in one God alone—no partners, no rivals. The second part recognizes Muhammad as God’s messenger, meaning Islam follows the guidance he delivered. Muslims recite the Shahada in daily prayer, and many also say it at important moments in life. For Muslims, it isn’t just a slogan—it’s a clear, spoken summary of what they believe. In one line, the Shahada names who God is, and how the message is conveyed.
