When you're with friends, how do you know which German pronoun to use? Think about your place in the conversation. If you're speaking about yourself, say ich: I. When you address one friend, say du: you. Choose by who's speaking, who you're addressing, and who you're talking about. For one person or thing being discussed, German has er, sie, and es. They follow grammatical gender, which can differ from a person's identity. For a group, use wir when you're included-"we"-and ihr when you speak to several friends-"you all." Then lowercase sie: it can mean "she" or "they." The conversation tells you which. Capitalized Sie means formal "you"; sentence position and context help you tell. So don't memorize a mystery list. In a German conversation, choose by role: ich is me, du is you, and the other forms show who else is there.
