What does three-fourths really mean when you're sharing a pizza? Imagine one whole pizza for you and your friends. To share it fairly, cut it into four equal slices. Equal matters: each slice must be the same size. You are not dividing it into random-sized pieces. The bottom number, four, is the denominator. It tells you how many equal parts make the whole pizza. Now look at the top number, three. That's the numerator. It counts how many of those parts you're using or thinking about. So the two numbers work together. They are not separate instructions. Together, they describe selected equal parts out of all the equal parts in the same whole. If three slices are taken from that four-slice pizza, the fraction is three-fourths. So what does three-fourths mean? It means three of four equal pieces of one whole.
