How could a rifle-cartridge dispute become the Revolt of 1857, like one unfair school rule bringing students together? In the East India Company's army, Indian soldiers believed cartridges were greased with cow and pig fat, threatening their religious beliefs. But that was only the spark. Soldiers faced harsh conditions, while rulers and landholders resented Company policies, annexations, and control. At Meerut on 10 May 1857, soldiers refused the cartridges, were punished, and rebelled. They reached Delhi, where Bahadur Shah Zafar became the uprising's symbolic leader, and revolt spread through northern and central India. But it was not one united movement: groups joined for different reasons, and many regions stayed out. British forces suppressed it by 1858. The East India Company lost power, and India came under direct British Crown rule. So how did cartridges cause the revolt? They ignited deeper anger at Company rule; defeat ended Company control.
