How can you share 12 cookies fairly among 4 kids? You are looking for a fair share, with the same number for every kid. Start with one cookie for each kid. Now everyone has one, and 8 cookies are still waiting in the pile. Give one more cookie to each kid. The groups stay equal: each kid has 2, and 4 cookies are left. The pile gets smaller, but the kids' shares stay equal. Keep going for one last round. Give each kid one of those 4 cookies, so no cookies are left. Now count just one kid's cookies: one, two, three. Every kid has the same 3 cookies, because each round gave one to everyone. That is division: sharing equally. 12 ÷ 4 = 3. Each kid gets 3 cookies. All 12 are shared equally, with none left over.
