Saturn's rings look permanent, but they're actually disappearing. Scientists have discovered that Saturn is slowly losing its rings through a process called ring rain. The rings are made mostly of ice and dust. Over time, Saturn's gravity and magnetic field pull this material into the planet's atmosphere. Data from NASA's Cassini mission showed that ring particles are constantly falling into Saturn. At the current rate, Saturn's famous rings could largely disappear within the next 100 to 300 million years. So if you've ever seen a picture of Saturn's rings, you're looking at a rare moment in the Solar System's history.
