Want homegrown tomatoes, but think constant watering is the key? Like a potted houseplant, give it light and check the soil before watering. The key isn't constant watering: tomatoes need steady moisture, warmth, and sun. Choose a warm spot with at least six hours of direct sun. Use soil that drains well, whether you're growing in a pot or in the ground. Water when the soil is beginning to dry, then soak it thoroughly. That keeps it from swinging between bone-dry and soggy. Check more often in hot weather, especially in a pot, which dries faster. Add a stake or cage while the plant is small, before its roots spread. Then let it grow and pick fruit when ripe. So, no daily rule: give it warmth, six or more hours of sun, and support; let weather and pot size set your watering rhythm.
