One box becomes two boxes-but if you just add s, you get boxs, babys, and childs. That is the trap: plural nouns are not all built the same. One pencil becomes two pencils. Most nouns are regular: add s. One book, two books. Check the ending first. Words ending in s, x, ch, or sh usually add es: bus, buses; box, boxes; brush, brushes. If a consonant comes before y, change y to ies: baby, babies. But after a vowel, add s: toy, toys. Then come irregular plurals. Child becomes children, and person becomes people. Remember these. Some words stay the same: one sheep, two sheep; one deer, two deer. Endings like f, fe, and o have exceptions, so check the word. Start with one school thing, check its ending, and choose the pattern. English has patterns-not one magic ending.
