If the trial news was good, why did Moderna shares plunge? The results appeared on a medical news site around 12:30 p.m. ET, well before their planned Saturday presentation in Madrid. The page came down soon after. Moderna fell nearly 24%, prompting a temporary trading halt-a pause when shares move too sharply. In a 1,137-patient melanoma trial, Moderna's personalized vaccine plus Keytruda was compared with Keytruda alone. The combination cut the risk of recurrence or death by 42%. After two years, 82.2% of patients were alive and cancer-free, versus 70% on Keytruda alone. The results were encouraging. The shock came from their apparent early release, amid worries that Moderna's valuation was already stretched. The wider market fell far less: the Nasdaq dropped 2.4%, while the S&P 500 fell 1.3%. Promising data couldn't offset the shock of the early release and valuation worries.
