She reaches for the doorway, but her legs will not hold her. She expects him to help. Instead, he turns away with a smile and walks out. She calls his name. Again. Nothing. Hope slips from her, and she sinks to the floor-too weak to rise, too hurt to believe anyone is coming. Then she feels a hand rest on her head, gentle as a blessing. Whatever that moment means, something inside her wakes. Her desire to live returns. She is still fighting cancer. The pain remains, and she is not healed. But now she gathers strength to continue, one choice at a time. First, she pushes herself up. Then she takes a step without asking to be carried. Another follows. Soon, movement becomes freedom. She walks alone, dances, and whistles in the street. Not because the pain is gone, but because her will to live has come back.
