When you roll a die in a board game, which results count if you want an even number? A fair die can land on one, two, three, four, five, or six. The six equally likely results make the sample space: every result the roll can give. Your event is what you're asking for-in this case, rolling an even number. So look at the same six results: two, four, and six fit. That gives you three results in the event, out of six in the whole sample space. The chance is not a guess. For equally likely outcomes, probability is the number that fit divided by the total number possible: P of E equals n of E over n of S. A probability runs from zero, impossible, to one, certain. So, which die results count for an even number? Three of the six: the chance is 3/6, or 1/2.
