You sit down to meditate, and thoughts keep coming. Then you wonder if you're doing it wrong. You don't need a silent mind. Anapanasati is simply paying attention to breathing; let your breath stay natural, not something to deepen or control. Sit comfortably, and notice the breath at your nostrils, chest, or belly. Feel one breath arrive, then leave. Stay with the sensations. Soon, attention will drift to a thought or sound. That's not a failed sit. Noticing the drift is part of the practice. Let the distraction go without scolding yourself, and bring attention back to the feeling of the next breath. No need to start over. The practice isn't keeping every thought away; it's noticing and returning. Let the breath stay ordinary. Notice it, and gently come back when you wander. That breath is enough to begin.
