What causes diabetes-is it simply eating too much sugar? Think of insulin as a key: it helps glucose-the sugar in your blood-enter your cells so they can use it for energy. Here's the turn: diabetes is not one disease with one cause. The type tells you what went wrong. In type 1 diabetes, the immune system attacks the cells in your pancreas that make insulin. Its trigger isn't fully known. In type 2 diabetes, your cells stop responding well to insulin. Over time, your body may also make less. Genes and other factors raise risk, but no single factor guarantees it. Gestational diabetes develops during pregnancy, when hormonal changes increase insulin resistance. So eating sugar alone does not cause every type, especially type 1. What causes diabetes? It depends on the type: immune damage, insulin resistance, or pregnancy-related changes shaped by biology and risk factors.
