Video narration
Before you rush in to help with CPR, what do you check first? Think of pausing before you cross a street: you look for danger before stepping forward. That quick pause matters here. First, ask: Am I safe? Make sure you can approach without putting yourself in danger. Second: Is the environment safe? Check whether the area around you is safe to enter. Third: Is the patient safe? That means, is it safe for you to approach them-not whether they are medically okay. Keep the order: you, the surroundings, then the patient. You need a yes to all three. If even one answer is no, the scene is not safe to approach yet. Taking this moment to check is part of helping; it is not wasted time. When all three answers are yes, consider the scene safe. Then move on to checking the person's response.
