How can you see a page when it isn't glowing? Point a flashlight at a page and follow the light. The flashlight gives off light, and its beam travels until it reaches the paper. The page doesn't make light of its own. When the beam hits, light bounces away. That bouncing is reflection. Some reflected light travels into your eyes. Your eyes don't collect the page itself; light from the page is what reaches them. The printed marks and pale spaces send light toward you, letting you make out the words. The path is simple: flashlight to page, then page to eye. The page is not sending sight to you. Light from the flashlight reflects off the paper and reaches your eyes. So how can you see a page that doesn't glow? The flashlight lights it, and reflected light carries its view to you.
