An ordinary stomachache can feel harmless-but appendicitis is inflammation of the appendix. It often starts when the appendix becomes blocked, allowing swelling and infection. Warning signs include worsening pain, sometimes shifting to the lower right abdomen, with nausea, vomiting, fever, or poor appetite. Don't diagnose it yourself: urgent medical assessment determines treatment, which may involve antibiotics, surgery, or both. Delay can let the appendix rupture and cause serious infection. Worsening pain with fever or vomiting needs urgent care.
