Do Telugu letters look like unfamiliar loops, leaving you unsure what sound to say or how to write them? They are not random shapes. Like an English letter in your notebook, each Telugu symbol connects a written shape to a sound. Telugu has two groups. అచ్చులు, or vowels, can stand alone. హల్లులు, or consonants, are the other main group. Start with a shape, such as క. Follow your teacher's stroke order: trace the curve slowly, repeat it. Say its sound: "ka." Add the vowel sign for "i." క becomes కి, read "ki." Together, the consonant and vowel sign make a readable syllable. Copy it and say "ka." Copy the joined form and say "ki." Reread it. Telugu is no longer a page of loops. Start with one letter: write its shape, say its sound, then join it with a vowel sign. That is how Telugu reading begins.
