When you argue with someone about what a scene in a film or novel really means, how do you know who's right? Maybe the scene isn't a locked box with one answer. You're asking it a question. One of you focuses on power: who controls it, and who pays the price. Another focuses on identity, desire, or the language characters use. Same scene, different lens-a way of looking-and new features appear. But not every opinion is equally strong. The lens changes the question; the text still tests the answer. Can you point to its words, actions, patterns, or silences? Can it explain them? That is literary theory: a toolkit for sharpening the questions you bring to stories. It doesn't replace your reaction; it makes you examine it. So, who's right? The reading that reveals something real in the scene and supports it with evidence.
