Why does the smell from a gas cylinder seem so awful-almost like rotten eggs? That sharp, sulfur-like stink can make you think the gas itself smells that way, or that something is wrong with the cylinder. But household LPG, or liquefied petroleum gas, is nearly odorless on its own. The gas itself isn't naturally foul. The sharp odor is added on purpose, so escaping gas is easier to notice. Ethyl mercaptan is one common odorant, but the exact one can vary. That stink is not a flaw; it's a warning. If gas escapes, the smell can alert you before you see anything happening. Still, the smell alone doesn't tell you exactly where it's coming from. If you smell gas, leave the area and seek help safely. It smells so bad because nearly odorless LPG is given a strong warning smell to help you notice a leak.
