When two Kannada words join, how can you tell whether the first word's vowel can disappear without changing the meaning? You may know the familiar experience of two Kannada words coming together and being written as one. At the joining point, one vowel can meet another: the end of the first word, then the beginning of the next. That is the setting for sandhi: one vowel comes before another. But dropping a vowel alone is not enough. The vowel from the earlier word must be left out, and the meaning must remain unchanged. Keep those conditions together; they mark one specific kind of change, not just any missing sound. So the question is not simply whether a vowel disappeared. Ask whether the meaning survived when the earlier word's vowel was omitted. Yes: when sandhi leaves out the earlier word's vowel without changing the meaning, that is ಲೋಪಸಂಧಿ.
