Where across India would you find all twelve Jyotirlingas-sacred shrines of Shiva? On a map, begin in the west: Gujarat has Somnath at Veraval and Nageshwar near Dwarka. Move southeast to Mallikarjuna at Srisailam, in Andhra Pradesh. In Madhya Pradesh, find Mahakaleshwar at Ujjain and Omkareshwar in Khandwa district. Then look north: Kedarnath in Uttarakhand, and Kashi Vishwanath in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. On the map, Maharashtra brings Bhimashankar in the Pune region and Trimbakeshwar near Nashik. Continue to Baidyanath at Deoghar, Jharkhand; then south to Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu. Finally, Maharashtra's Grishneshwar lies near Sambhajinagar. Follow the map from west to south, and each name gains a place. Now the twelve names are not a scattered list. On the map, they form a chain of sacred places across states. They stretch from Gujarat to Tamil Nadu, across many parts of India.
