What would happen to your neighborhood if everyone disappeared overnight? Homes and streets would look familiar, but the lights and taps you count on depend on people keeping their systems running; even green spaces need care. Without people to operate and repair power and water systems, service would become unreliable, then fail, at different times in different places. Pets and livestock would lose care; some would escape or survive, while others would be vulnerable. Here's the surprise: human systems fail before nature takes over. In your neighborhood, weeds would spread through yards and cracks, while wildlife explored quieter streets. But nature wouldn't move in everywhere at the same speed. An empty street isn't a clean slate. Buildings would remain, and pollution and other human effects would continue. So what happens? Your neighborhood loses its people-powered systems fast. Plants and wildlife move in slowly; buildings and pollution linger.
