Your pencil is at the first row, ready to join word parts. Join muf and fin for muffin, pum and kin for pumpkin, nap and kin for napkin, but and ter for butter, and rib and bon for ribbon. Fill four blanks from the clues: a helmet goes on your head; a cactus has sharp spines; winter hands fit in a mitten; a dentist helps when your tooth hurts. Next comes the syllable sort. A syllable is a spoken beat. Here's the twist: every word already has two beats. Rabbit, kitten, muffin, butter, ribbon, pepper, and mutter all belong together. Circle the doubled letters: bb in rabbit and ribbon, tt in kitten, butter, and mutter, ff in muffin, and pp in pepper. Last, write two sentences of your own using mother, sister, or country. Build the words, hear the beats, and make them yours in writing.
