What if Earth began falling toward a black hole? Like a rubber band pulled harder at one end, Earth would stretch as it drew closer. As Earth approaches, gravity pulls harder on the near side than the far side. Those uneven pulls, called tidal forces, can tear a planet apart. But Earth's fate depends on how massive the black hole is. Earth could be torn apart before the event horizon, the black hole's boundary-or cross it intact.
