You can end a friendly cold call and still have no idea whether it was worth pursuing. A pleasant conversation alone isn't proof. The goal isn't to squeeze in a pitch and earn a yes. It's to hear whether there's a real need and a reason to act. Use BANT-four signals in the conversation: Budget means money available or planned; Authority, access to someone involved in the decision; Need, a problem your offer can address; and Timeline, when they expect to act. Don't fire these off like a checklist. Follow the prospect's answers, noticing what they reveal-and what remains unclear. First-call answers can be incomplete, so use judgment. Then choose the next step the conversation supports: continue with the right person, follow up when timing is clearer, or stop. On your next cold call, let BANT guide a real next step-not force a yes.
