Imagine realizing the place you call home is no longer safe because of what you believe. Finding a safer place is not giving up; it helps you stay protected. That was the choice facing some of the first Muslims in Mecca. Persecuted for their faith, some left for Abyssinia, seeking safety far from Mecca. This journey, the Hijrah to Abyssinia, was a move made for protection. There, according to the familiar account, Ja'far ibn Abi Talib stood before the Najashi, the ruler of Abyssinia, and defended the Muslims. They needed protection, not a reason to abandon what they believed. Their journey changed where they lived, not what they believed. What seemed like leaving the mission was actually protecting the people who carried it. They sought safety so they could remain steadfast in their faith.
