What if the rib cage around your chest is more than a protective cage? It is the complete wall around the thorax-not just the ribs, but a framework of bone, muscle, connective tissue, spaces, and nerves. Behind you, the wall meets the vertebral column. Along the sides are the ribs and intercostal spaces; in front, the sternum. Together, these boundaries surround and support the chest. But the thoracic wall is not merely a hard shield. Its muscles and connective tissues let the chest expand and recoil with each breath. Between neighboring ribs, the intercostal spaces hold muscles, blood vessels, and nerves. So the same wall that guards the heart and lungs can also move around them. What is the thoracic wall, then? It is a protective, layered framework-your movable chest wall-that protects vital organs while moving the chest as you breathe.
