How can you tell what is alive in your classroom? Look around: a child and a plant are living. A pencil, toy car, and fan are non-living. Why? Living things share signs. They grow, use energy, respond to what happens around them, and can make more of their kind. A child grows and uses energy from food. A plant uses energy from sunlight and responds to light, even though it stays in one place. But here is the tricky part: movement alone is not the test. A toy car moves when you push it, and a fan moves when electricity powers it. Neither is alive. So, when you find a new classroom example, ask: Does it grow, use energy, respond, and make more of its kind? If yes, it is a living thing. If not, it is a non-living thing. That is how you spot life.
