What is each part of this small plant doing? Look closely at the plant you might hold in a classroom, garden, or park. Under the soil are the roots. They hold the plant in place and take in water. Up from the roots is the stem. It supports the plant and carries water to the leaves and flowers. Here is the big surprise: a plant is not just one green thing. Each part has its own job. Leaves use sunlight to help make food for the plant. Flowers help the plant make seeds. The fruit protects those seeds, and a seed can grow into a new plant. So the little plant is really a team. Roots, stem, leaves, and flowers work together. What is each part doing? Roots take in water, the stem supports and carries it, leaves make food, and flowers help make seeds.
