Have you ever cared about someone and still said the wrong thing to them? You're in a tense conversation. They say, "You never listen," and you get defensive. Caring about them doesn't stop that feeling from shaping your reply. Social and emotional intelligence is noticing what's happening in you and in the other person, then choosing how to respond. So before firing back, name it to yourself: "I feel hurt." That pause gives you a choice. You could say, "I want to understand. What felt unheard?" Instead of deciding you know what they're feeling, you check. Let them tell you. That doesn't mean hiding your feelings or guessing theirs. You can make room for what you feel without letting it choose your words. Because caring alone doesn't steer your words. Notice what you feel, check what they might feel, then choose your response.
