Changing boy to girl feels easy, but gender questions become confusing when spelling does not follow one rule. In school and family examples, start with the person word: boy, uncle, or teacher. If the noun is masculine gender, meaning a male person, its opposite may be a different word: boy becomes girl, and uncle becomes aunt. This is the first pattern. Sometimes the word changes its ending: actor becomes actress. Do not add "-ess" to every word; learn each pair as it is. And sometimes the same word is used for male or female. Teacher is an example of common gender, a noun that can name either. In a sentence, identify the noun, change it to the required gender, and rewrite the sentence. Check: does the new noun fit the meaning? Remember: choose the correct pair, ending, or unchanged common-gender word.
