Why did Seagate fall 11% and Western Digital 7% after Toshiba's report? Think of a local business watching a well-funded rival expand nearby: both now compete for the same customers. Reportedly, Toshiba plans to invest $400 million and double hard-drive production by 2027. That matters because AI data centers need storage, and more drives could give buyers another source-and put pressure on established suppliers. But the concern is not simply that more drives will be made. Toshiba already has more than 10% of the market, and it is aiming for 30%. Still, a production plan is not a market-share result. Doubling output does not mean Toshiba will win those customers, and the report does not prove the target is within reach. So why the drops? Investors may see Toshiba as a new rival for data-center storage-not a company that has already secured its 30% market-share target.
