How can a long list on your phone scroll smoothly without keeping a separate view for every row? Watch the rows slide up: when one leaves the screen, RecyclerView can reuse its view for an item coming into view. The key is not keeping every row view alive: RecyclerView reuses off-screen views and binds them to different items. That means the old content is replaced, not carried along. An Adapter supplies the data and binds it to each row; a ViewHolder holds references to the row's views, and a LayoutManager arranges them in a list or grid. Use RecyclerView for collections with many items or content that changes, especially when items are added, removed, or updated. It isn't necessary for every screen. So your long phone list stays efficient: row views can serve new items as you scroll.
