How can a plant make food if it never eats? Think of each leaf as a tiny kitchen: sunlight supplies energy, while water from the roots and carbon dioxide from the air are ingredients. With chlorophyll, the leaf turns these inputs into glucose-a sugar the plant can use or store. This is photosynthesis. That tiny kitchen makes its own food: using light energy, it turns water and carbon dioxide into sugar, and releases oxygen into the air.
