How does a flashlight turn a battery into light? Energy isn't just one thing. In your flashlight, energy can be stored in the battery, move through the circuit, and come out as light and warmth. You also meet motion, stored energy, and sound all around you every day. But the battery doesn't contain light. Its chemical energy-energy stored in chemicals-changes form on the way to the bulb. Inside the battery, chemical energy becomes electrical energy: energy moving through the flashlight's circuit. At the bulb, that electrical energy changes again, becoming light energy you can see and thermal energy you feel as heat. Energy hasn't appeared from nowhere; it has changed forms along the way. So how does the flashlight turn a battery into light? The battery's chemical energy becomes electrical energy, then light and thermal energy-making the flashlight shine and warm a little.
