How can watching your breath be meditation if the advanced aim is to do nothing? When you follow a few breaths on purpose, you guide attention toward a clear goal. In this framing, that is the basic process: doing something with your mind deliberately. Chanting is another example. At first, meditation can look like effort: staying with the breath and chosen focus. But the point is not to keep adding effort forever. Breath-watching is not the opposite of doing nothing. It's a starting practice in this particular understanding of meditation, moving from deliberate focus toward less intentional activity. The destination is described as doing nothing with mind or body-not as another task to perform. So why watch the breath? In this view, it is a starting point; the advanced direction is letting go of deliberate effort with mind and body.
