Have you ever sat completely still, yet found your mind racing through notifications, memories, and reactions? Patanjali gives yoga a very different definition in the Yoga Sutras: yogas citta-vrtti-nirodhah. In simple terms, citta is the mind, vrtti is its changing activity, and nirodhah means bringing those patterns to stillness or under control. Thoughts, memories, and reactions keep pulling attention away, until the mind seems to run the moment. But yoga does not mean forcing your mind to become blank. Thoughts can arise. The practice is learning not to be carried away by every thought, feeling, or reaction. Yoga is less about what your body can stretch into, and more about whether changing patterns control your attention. The goal is steadiness, not erasure. So, what is yoga? It is quieting the mind's changing patterns, so awareness is no longer constantly pulled around.
