Why does lifting the same backpack to the same shelf faster count as more power? In everyday talk, work can mean trying hard. In physics, effort alone isn't enough: the backpack has to move. As you lift it, work is the upward force you apply times how far the backpack moves upward. Keep the backpack and shelf the same, and the work stays the same, whether you lift slowly or quickly. That work transfers energy to the backpack, so it has more energy at the shelf than below. Here's the key: it gets the same energy either way. What changes is how quickly that transfer happens. Power tells you how quickly work is done. The same work in less time means greater power. So, same backpack, same shelf, less time: more power-not more work.
